Update [5/8/23]: Exactly five years have passed since Jack’s made a commitment to broiler chicken welfare and cage-free eggs. As you know, the world has changed a lot since then. Like many businesses, restaurants were hit very hard but the Covid Pandemic. This pandemic took many resources to navigate and only brought more hardships in the form of supply chain issues. Unfortunately, these setbacks, along with avian flu outbreaks and egg shortages, have made it challenging to work with our vendors to accomplish our objectives.
While the world has changed, our commitment to humanely treating animals has not, and we still care about animal welfare. As 2023 unfolds, things appear to be improving with supply chain and workforce stability. As the smoke clears, we will bring a focus back to these initiatives. In Q4 of 2023, Jack’s will begin to have honest conversations with suppliers about progress toward these initiatives and begin to build a roadmap on how and when we can reasonably and responsibly achieve these goals. Our goal is to have that plan in place by the end of Q1 2024.
Care for our animals is an important part of the Southern tradition that Jack’s exemplifies every day. We’re proud to be part of a growing industry committed to humanely treating the animals we depend on. Like our customers, we care about animal welfare. We also recognize that the quality and safety of our food depend on healthy animals. We are working with our egg suppliers to ensure a smooth transition as we commit to use 100 percent cage-free eggs by 2025 or sooner.
We’re also continuing to collaborate with animal welfare organizations to ensure our sourcing standards consider the well-beings of animals. Currentlv, Jack’s is working to developing meaningful animal welfare standards for the broiled chickens in our supply chain.
By 2024, we will source only chicken certified by Global Animal Partnership (GAP) and require all chickens to be processed in a manner that avoids pre-stun handling and instead utilizes a multi-step controlled atmosphere processing system that induces an irreversible stun.
